Healthcare partners play an important role in not only treating and managing childhood obesity and other chronic diseases associated with it, but by advocating for healthy environments, investing in communities, coordinating resources for children and families and promoting wellness within the industry.

Strategies

Strategy 1

Implement health and wellness policies to support healthy nutrition, physical activity in all healthcare settings for patients, employees and visitors.

Strategy 2

Promote breastfeeding as the healthiest first food by implementing workplace lactation policies which include access to lactation accommodations.

Strategy 3

Provide access to fresh, clean water throughout the day.

Strategy 4

Work with health plans to improve reimbursement for providers for obesity prevention, diagnosis and treatment services.

Strategy 5

Utilize the Hunger Vitals Sign screening tool to identify signs of food insecurity/hunger and refer families to appropriate food assistance programs.

Strategy 6

Apply universal Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) screening in the pediatric clinic.

Strategy 7

Participate in local coalitions or partnerships that aim to promote policy, systems, and environmental changes for active living and/or healthy eating.

Strategy 8

Aim to achieve a “baby-friendly” designation to support breastfeeding efforts.
